Keeping in view the high risk and emergence of zoonotic infections, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences (FVS) took the initiative to organize and hold 1st International Conference on Zoonoses-2014 on October 16-17, 2014 at FVS, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Bosan Road, Multan. This meeting attracted a large number of infectious disease physicians, trainees, veterinarians, microbiologists, laboratory scientists, public health physicians, researchers, policy makers, epidemiologists and other health care professionals from inland and abroad. More than 500 participants including 5 international delegates from research and academic organizations of UK, India and Germany attended this meeting. Due to the overwhelming response of participants and prime importance of zoonotic threats in current era, it was decided to make this event a permanent feature of Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, BZ University, Multan on every alternate year to bring the experts together around the theme of Zoonoses. In continuation of 1st International Conference on Zoonoses-2014, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan has planned this 2nd meeting with the aim to bring together veterinarians, medical practitioners and laboratory scientists around the theme of zoonoses in Pakistan. The conference will attract and influence its audience through a program of presentations and panel discussions addressing critical aspects of Zoonoses, with particular emphasis on the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases. The conference will feature presentations by well known authorities with key roles in the areas of research relevant to conference title. Efforts will be made to highlight the areas where new approaches need to be developed and reinforced.
Zoonotic pathogens represent serious threat to human health and generate a great covenant of public health concern and scientific interest in both veterinary and medical sectors. According to a recent report, 75% of the emerging diseases originate from domestic or wild animals. Concern is grown towards zoonotic diseases because of multiple factors like their unpredictable nature, their ability to emerge anywhere and spread rapidly around the globe and their major economic impact on industries. Unfortunately, most of the zoonotic diseases are neglected, having received a lack of attention from researchers, policy makers and funders for many years. In order to highlight the importance of zoonotic disease and to promote greater multi-disciplinary input; the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Pakistan has arranged this 2nd International Conference on Zoonoses-2016. The researchers and experts in this conference are expected to explore the reasons and factors driving the emergence of zoonotic diseases to prominence and to identify more efficient strategies and research programs that need to be developed for better understanding and control of emerging zoonotic infections and their public health impact. I do hope that participants will find this event a valuable addition in their existing scientific knowledge and wish them a great success in their future endeavors.
